Pixel aspect ratio is a ratio that represents the squareness of a pixel. For a perfectly square pixel, the ratio is 1:1 and this is the ratio used on most computer-based video. For DVDs and VCDs which display a 720×480 image, it is common to use a pixel aspect ratio 1.25:1 in order to display video that uses a screen aspect ratio of 4:3.
