Cross Platform
Some Cross Platform software for the playing of multimedia files are:

  • Mplayer – A powerful video player that is able to play almost all the more popular media formats.
  • RealPlayer – The standard player for RealAudio and RealMedia files.
  • VLC – A highly portable multimedia player for numerous file formats.

Windows
Some useful Windows software for the playing of multimedia files are:

  • Windows Media Player – Windows’s standard player.
  • Quicktime For Windows Player – Gives you the ability to play QuickTime files on windows.
  • Media Player Classic – A freeware player that is developed to play all available formats.
  • iTunes – A very popular music playing program from Apple that give you the ability to import music, convert music files, organize your playlists, burn CDs, sync with your iPod and buy music directly through the massive iTunes Music Store.

Macintosh
Some useful Mac OS X software for the playing of multimedia files are:

  • QuickTime (Pro) – A very powerful video player that is able to play .mov and .avi (including DivX) formats, a large variety of audio files (including .aiff, mp3, and mp4), edit clips, import movie files, export and convert movie and audio files, and stream QuickTime video directly from your internet browser.
  • iTunes – A very popular music playing program from Apple that give you the ability to import music, convert music files, organize your playlists, burn CDs, sync with your iPod and buy music directly through the massive iTunes Music Store.
  • RealOne – A good video player for playing back the Real Player video format (.rm/.ram)
  • Windows Media Player – The Mac OS X verison of Microsofts video player.
  • Rhythmbox – An audio file player with the ability to sync with iPods, listen to Internet radio stations, and an interface that sorts songs by metadata (similarly to iTunes), as well as support for all audio file types supported by GStreamer.
  • DivX – An average Video Player for playing types of files called .divx files. It can also play various .avi files and .mpg files which are encoded in DivX format.

Linux
Some useful Linux software for the playing of multimedia files are:

  • Xine – A powerful multimedia framework, with many different frontends available.
  • Totem – A GStreamer-based video player for the GNOME desktop (Xine-based builds available).
  • XMMS – Audio file player with the ability to listen to Internet radio stations (XMMS, formerly X11Amp, is modeled after the Windows player WinAmp, and is compatible with WinAmp skins)
  • Juk – Playlist-based song player for the KDE desktop.
  • Mpg321 – MP3 audio file player.
  • Play – Audio player, able to handle all file formats supported by Sox.
  • Rhythmbox – An audio file player with the ability to sync with iPods, listen to Internet radio stations, and an interface that sorts songs by metadata (similarly to iTunes), as well as support for all audio file types supported by GStreamer.
