So long Rev!
The site has been great with you.
I just back today after another long absense, and saw the gold admin logo on Schlaeps, and then found this thread.
Tis the end of an era, but congrats to Schlaeps, an excellent choice for your successor!
Ive been hearing a lot of criticism for leopard recently. Theres also been quite a bit aimed at Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, although thats mainly driver related issues. TBH, I have had few or no problems with my XP set up which I use for music, and although I’d like a Mac, it’d be a Tiger one for me.
Im happy with Knoppix and DamnSmallLinux…[Read more]
I agree with ladon.
Each to his own.
I run knoppix and xp. True, I prefer XP to vista, and I prefer Knoppix to both. I like OSX about the same as Knoppix.
Also, Linux is the only OS ive seen that has internal flame wars. But still, theyre all fighting when essentially they are all running different modifications of the same OS and…[Read more]
Thanks for the help everyone!
I am now typing this from a smoothly running LiveCD copy of Knoppix!! heheh. 😀
I managed to scrape a DSL install on the laptop too which is good. I just have no ethernet or sound at the moment.
And Mr Fast? LiveCD work doesnt seem to be that slow to me. About the same, if…[Read more]
Im gonna stick with Live distros at the mo.
Although Im going to request a free Ubuntu disc from them. From what you’ve said and what I’ve read Mirko, it looks amazing.
Ive got DSL burning onto a cd for the laptop at the mo, and Knoppix is still downloading.
And Mr Fast, AntiX takes up almost 500mb, whereas DSL uses but 50mb.
Thanks for the advice Mr Fast (Never thought Id get to say that, you’ve changed since I last frequented these pages it seems).
And dvondrake, I will be dual booting. Hence the LiveCD thing.
And Ill have a go with Linux tracker on the Elive front.
I had a look at that Thinkpad article, but unfortunately, my thinkpad is far older than…[Read more]
RAM should be fine, Ive got 1.5GB heh.
Ive checked and Ubuntu will ship me a CD free of charge which is nice of them heheh.
I like the Gnome interface, it looks quite smooth.
At the mo im looking at:
Ubuntu/Kubuntu – Desktop
Musix – Desktop
Knoppix – Desktop
An OSX Skin, possibly Baghira
DSL – Laptop
PuppyLinux – Laptop
Thanks mirko. Ill have a look at Ubuntu. Any advice for that?
Also, its an 800GB external with a 100GB partition that I use for data, but is currently empty, so can it run off jsut that partition, or would I definitely need the 3?. The other is a backup partition for Windows.
Really, Id like a simple to set up Linux system on my external disk…[Read more]
Thanks. Sharing a folder would be a good idea for switching my audio files around.
On a closer look at Elive, it looks perfect, except you have to make a donation.
Im looking for a completely free operating system, and that kinda annoyed me a bit because its that good.
Ill look into it.
I dont mind running more than one…[Read more]
Thanks for the advice!
My desktop is fairly new (about 1-2 years old). Its the laptop that is the dinosaur heh.
To ahnt, I have a decent knowledge of C and a small amount of C++, and Im fairly experienced with MSDOS, Windows 95-XP and Acorn RISC OS (But i havent used it for a while).
EliveCD looks promising. The GUI looks great!
Not new. At all really…
The guys at UPF (Barcelona) created the REACTABLE http://mtg.upf.edu/reactable/ quite a while ago!
Its open hardware and software. And Bjork uses it apparently (It was on the Computer Music Blog). This is a musical interface, but the technology is still there.

Hmm. This film looks pretty epic. I might see it if I get round to it.
The trailers look especially good, and I like the addition of the NIN song in the background. heh. Sets it apart from the average historical movies being chucked out recently.
heh. Yeh. A fender would be nice. I prefer my gould to the gibson sg. It plays nicer and looks nicer (it has one horn higher than the other, fender style). I wouldnt buy a gibson personally. I think a few thousand is a bit much really.
Wow, those are both really nice!
Must’ve taken you a while to save up for those.
It took a while but they werent that much, compared to others.
The Gould was about £150 instead of £210, and the Westfield Strat was £59 instead of £89. The Gould is a 5 star guitar, and the westfield is pretty good too.
