  • That GraphEdit tutorial is slightly out of date. The Encyclopedia’s GraphEdit page provides more recent installation instructions, but does not cover encoding in detail. GraphEdit is powerful but not the most convenient software to use. FreeAnime, limited as it is, may be the simplest encoding option on Windows.

  • Just a reminder that submission deadline is less than a month away and a small picture of saulgoode’s prizes:

  • (MPEG-1 Layer 3. The “.mp3″ format is I believe, identical to “.mpg”, without the video stream, named differently to avoid confusion.)

Sort of off-topic, but LowweeK’s audio guide would make a nice start for guides on recording and using sounds, were he available to give permission to copy it into the Encyclopedia. Unfortunately, that link is…[Read more]

Please consider asking the vendors of your software to support these audio formats. They may…[Read more]

  • I’m with Sloth on the more cartoon gimmicks. I think the look and style of bricks lends itself to that sort of thing. For a great black and white silent film, check out the Buster Keaton film The Goat at Archive.org. There is a lot of really funny stuff in there (and some cheesy stuff as well).

The films are still here. They have not been stolen. While I don’t condone this likely copyright infringement, emotionally charged language rarely helps a sound argument. I also find it interesting that Rise of the Empire and I assume Grand Theft Auto…[Read more]

Aled, typically to get Linux you download a bootable installation CD image (.iso), burn it to CD with an appropriate tool, and boot your computer from the CD, starting the Linux installation. Ubuntu is a good Linux distribution and may be downloaded from ubuntu.com. If you are new to Linux and not quite ready to install it, a “Live CD” is a good…[Read more]

  • Krick Films, if by “in the public domain”, you mean “in the public domain” then of course you can use it. I think Rev is somewhat skeptical that the music you believe to be in the public domain is actually in the public domain… it would be rotting away on some obscure tape format at this point. If the music in question is an original work, and…[Read more]

  • Interesting plot… I like how it ties together at the end (how do you plan on having a minifig do a thumbs up? a wink may be easier, but I’d be interested to see what you come up with). I agree with Mirko that it may take some time to convincingly develop. One suggestion: I think the brainwashing machine is unecessary. Disguised time travelers…[Read more]

  • four_corners, if I’m not mistaken you had previously tried SUPER without success? Are you saying it worked this time? MediaCoder looks interesting… I hadn’t seen that one before.

You also may be interested in GraphEdit. It’s a bit complex and low-level, but may be able to get you out of some transcoding jams (and I think the Real Alternative…[Read more]

  • Mirko, I am sorry to hear that the Canon’s ability to be somewhat remote controlled is rare. Based on what I’ve seen, I can confirm that my PowerShot A70 can send the viewfinder image over USB as well as a full camera capture, but the controls for adjusting white balance etc. are Canon-specific extensions atop PTP. With Saul’s pointing it out,…[Read more]

  • Sounds neat. I assume this is for Windows? I don’t run Windows myself, but do you have any screenshots? I’d be interested to see how you laid things out, or any tips you might have on programming your Powershot. I am (very slowly) attempting to integrate something similar into my small Linux frame capture software.

Does a video player exist that detects insufficient CPU and procedes to do the preprocessing automatically, much like streaming players buffer a stream? That would seem to be the ultimate in convenience (except that the network buffers never seem to buffer enough to play the whole thing without pausing…). It could even litter the filesystem…[Read more]

  • “It may work, but it may not.” Very true, very true.

As for becoming “too popular” and getting a big bandwidth bill… what can I say? “Too bad” isn’t very nice. “Install bandwidth limiters” isn’t always possible. “Make boring films” doesn’t work either. This is a sad feature of the internet. Assume for a moment that increased popularity…[Read more]

  • Timboh56, as I said above, I mistook what was meant by “submit a film”. I apologize for the confusion. I tend to divide the process into two steps: upload a film to a website (done by the director), submit the [link to the] film to a directory or website (done by the director or by anyone who wishes to discuss the film on a website).

    A movie…[Read more]

  • And I can think of reasons why I’d like to win the lottery…

I don’t follow your reasoning. To me, creating a directory of films made by others is very similar to discussing a film with a few friends, or a newspaper article reviewing the currently showing films, or a book about the best westerns.

Though, I may have confused things…[Read more]

  • Timboh56, I respectfully disagree with your assertion: “Its plain and simple, its someone else’s property, they get to choose what they want to do with it, no matter what the circumstances are.”

First, a movie is not property.

Second, are you saying that it would be wrong to set up a site that indexed movies? And included reviews and…[Read more]

  • Can you describe your setup in more detail? I’m not really a mic expert, but I divide mics into two general categories: “normal” mics and PC mics. A normal mic (based on a quick search, it appears your mic is one of these, but again, more detail would be helpful) plugs into a preamp, which brings the mic signal up to line level, and then into a…[Read more]
