you have been invited here because you are… 1) a review panel member without an entry in the contest Together we shall decide the nominations for this lovely contest. First off, you’ll need to watch the entries. You can find them neatly arranged here: http://www.globo-chem.net/ape/ Then you’ll need to think about these films in terms of the contest objectives. On the events page you’ll find the judging criteria, and its in consideration of these criteria that will you choose some nominations. I think we’ll handle it this way: Make up a list of films you feel should be nominated. It doesn’t matter what length, just as long as it’s 10 or less. If you only want to nominate 1, that’s fine too. After all of us (that are participating) have presented our lists, I’ll look them over and try to determine where a standard deviation might lie, and make the cut off there, thus determining which films are nominated and which are not. Keep in mind that this is only for the first, second, and third prizes. Pay no attention to the criteria for the two Sisters’ Awards, those are completely independent. Thanks very much to Paul for not only providing us the prize, but helping with the judging. |

I’ve been watching most of these movies for longer than anyone else, so it’s only natural that I manage to gather my nominations first. I went through all the films just now, and wrote down the ones I thought might deserve a nomination. It turns out there were nine, so I just decided to keep the list whole. Here they are, and some notes about why they get a nod from me (in alphabetical order): 1) AMS – Cause and Effect(s). A fly in the coffee spirals into a catastrophe involving an ocean liner and a national treasure. Aside from the great production quality (very cinematic), I really liked this series of escalating events. Then at the end it turns out it could have all been prevented if he’d just worn his hearing aid. 2) Brickbrock – A Frosty Welcome. A mysterious series of events in the Star Wars universe turn out to only be a dream about our protagonists monkey. But is the monkey as innocent as he seems? A very engaging method of narration mixed with action story telling. 3) Digital Dave – The Hand of Fate. A fantastic story that could only make sense in the brickfilming world, one we all wish we’d have thought of. Even without its great production qualities, this film’s story is strong enough to earn it a nomination with almost no thought. 4) Ferder – The Museum. Another ‘it was all a dream… or was it?’ type story. Very creative and terrifying place to be after dark, this museum is. This story isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but I thought a lot of thought and imagination went into Ferder’s creation. 5) Hali – Hit and Run. A great film that appears very complicated at first, but then turns out to be rather simple. Irony abounds here. 6) Leftfielder – Abduction! This one is my favorite in terms of entertainment value. Alien abduction is always scary, and it’s difficult to tell what’s happening to the poor character throughout this film. I thought the creepy psychoanalyst was a great touch. 7) Mark B – Reality, What a Concept. Another ‘feined world’ film. This one I truly was not expecting. After becoming used to the white, empty existence with the large, talking face, the ‘real world’ looked surprisingly real and all of a sudden there was a whole other, feasible explanation for these peculiar events. 8) Richard Creel – An’D. A wonderful parallel is created between a group of role players and their imaginary world. And then the worlds cross… I thought more could have been done with this, but even with what was done it was a great and imaginative film, not to mention excellent production quality. Lighting and sound was a treat. 9) The Janitor – Prey. A hunter meets his spooky demise. In my opinion, this film displayed the best animation of the entries. A fantastic, wordless creation of mood, coupled with a creative, though somewhat poorly defined, premise. |

Ok, here are my nominations. So, here the commented list (by order of the files on my disk, not related to my own ratings). Boettcher – “Lionheart’s birthday”, because I love the childish mood of it and the animation was good, even if the scenarion is quite poor. Brickbrock – “Frosty welcome”, nice animation, nice sets Creel Underground – “An’D”, nice idea, nice sets, good effects DigitalDave – “The Hand Of Fate”, very good idea, good screenplay and rythm, nice effects. very good voice acting, nice ending Felix – “Stranded”, not because I did the music, but nice timing, nice sets, nice mood, a bit short at the end. Ferder – “The Museum”, nice set, very good mood, nice twilight lighting, a lot of anim, cinematography Hali – “Hit & Run”, nice mood, original scenario, nice sound, cinematography The Janitor – “Prey”, nice sets, nice mastering of suspense, nice cam movements, cinematography LeMieux67 – “Time Lapse”, lots of anim, sound not so good audio work, a classical scenario but effective MarkB – “Reality What A Concept”, nice plot, nice effects, smart end Nosniborus – “The Fun House”, nice concept, nice music, lots of anims, but poor compression. Among all these, I got a special preference for: |

Hey Lowweek, hate to do this to you, but you’ve got 11. You’ll have to trim your list down to 10, just for fairness sake. |

MarkB – Reality, What a Concept! Finally two that score very low in story (at least when it comes to keeping with the theme) but have great production values: Hali – Hit and Run This was very difficult. There are no justifications of my choices due to lack of time, but I don’t think we can keep the people waiting for much longer. Stefan. |

I don’t wanna sound hasty, but I think we should speed up the final judging of the contest. We won’t release them in April, won’t we ? How many votes are you still waiting for, Josh ? |
