What is the best (free) program for editing. The one I want has to be able to use ‘.avi’ files. I want one that is easy to use, but is compatible for making special effects.

The only free editing software that can do special effects that I am aware of is Axogon Composer. It does pretty much everything you need. One thing that is a somewhat bad is the steep learning curve. There are quite a few tutorials out there to help though.
Here is a link to a download site:

got it. thanks. Does anybody know any programs that have a simpler setup (like the imovie/legostudios one).
I’m using the tutorial at bricksinmotion.com for Axagon but I’m having a bit of trouble. For some reason I can’t get a video clip into the track. I made a video source then clicked on it then I browsed for the clip I wanted but nothing happens when I selected it.

A simple solution for just editing (not creating special effects) is DDClip Free. I have not used it much, but many people around here seem to like it. Here is the link to that:

DDClip Free can be used to add up to four tracks of sounds. It can also be used to edit video clips. There are two video tracks that you can put all of your scenes together in. I don’t know much more about it though.
