Dear Schlaeps/Z, To get the chat back to work in its current configuration, the program “screen” needs to be installed on the server. This is a standard Unix tool allowing users to keep programs running even after disconnecting. Of course, should a hacker gain access to the server, then this poses a security risk (he could run a spambot or something), but without it I don’t know how to keep the chat server running. I believe the risk is worth taking (a hacker needs a server username+password combination to abuse it), but it’s your call. If you install it, you can put /home/brickco/startchat into some file at /etc/init.d (if I recall correctly) to make it start automatically with a server reboot. The manual start should also function again then. Good luck! Contact me if there are problems (I don’t visit brickfilms.com as much as I used to, so e-mail or MSN Messenger will be more effective). Stefan. |

Our research indicates that this may be a good solution: https://blueimp.net/ajax/. Any thoughts? |

Possibly. The current chat application was built because web-based chat applications had horrible response times. But that was before the advent of AJAX. Still, it seems to me that running a dedicated server will (like IRC or our solution) provide the best chat experience. On the other hand, if it’s easy to install, it can’t hurt test-driving it. Note that the reason we need ‘screen’ is that we need to run the Java application BFChatServer continuously. If there’s a way to run it as a ‘daemon’ or something, we might not need ‘screen’. Note that BFChatServer needs read/write access to the /home/brickco/public_html/phpBB2/bfchat/ directory and needs to accept incoming connections from port 27425. Thanks for helping us out, and good luck! P.S. I notice Schlaeps is working on a new solution. Maybe it’s better to make him hurry P.P.S. I just logged in to the server, and notice that BfChatServer is, in fact, running. So it’s now simply a firewall issue. If only I remembered how to open up that port… Took me quite some time too, last time. |
