The Nadine and Charlie Music Video Competition

The music group Nadine and Charlie would like to see some brickfilms made to go along with some of their tracks, and they’re putting up 300 quid to help inspire people to do it. This contest is very simple: Pick a Nadine and Charlie tune (see below) and animate a brickfilm to go with it. Nadine and Charlie will choose their three favorite videos and award the directors with prize money.

There are 7 tracks available for you to animate. You can find them in downloadable form here.

The top 7 tracks in this list are downloadable:

-Basic Instinct
-Just Push Play
-Below the Waterline
-System Reboot
-Signs of Life
-Safe
-I Love You

I recommend you download all seven of them and give them a good listen before deciding which one to use. I also recommend that you listen to them because they’re pretty cool.

Nadine and Charlie will award the following prizes, based entirely on what they decide to be their favorites

200 British Pounds for first place
50 British Pounds for a runner up
50 British Pounds for an other runner up

How much is a Pound? At the time of this posting, 1 British Pound = ~$1.72 US, which puts first place at about $345 US.

Your video must be a brickfilm in the classic sense of the term. That means it needs to be stopmotion animation and you need to be animating LEGO, Mega-bloks, et al.

Don’t put any titles or credits during the music. You should certainly include titles and/or credits, but put them before the music starts or after it ends.

By submitting an entry in this contest, you are giving Nadine and Charlie the rights to use and distribute your film to promote the band. It’s very important that you understand this before starting on a video.

As usual, cooperative efforts are welcome and encouraged. Just make sure prize distribution between you is agreed upon ahead of time in case you win anything.

Also as usual, you may use absolutely no material for which you do not have distribution rights. This includes recognizable trademarks, so if you end up with LEGO logos that are visible, you need to blur them out before submitting your video. The “no-copyright rule,” as it’s come to be called, should be much easier to observe in this contest since there’s no need for music or sound effects.

The due date for this contest will be Sunday March 12th. Your film must be finished, uploaded, and downloadable by the end of that day (by California reckoning).

To submit your entry to the contest:

-Upload your finished film somewhere it can be downloaded with relative ease. As usual, an ftp directory will be provided for people who need it.

-Send an e-mail to joshua@brickfilms.com containing the following information: The names of all participating directors; the brickfilms forum names of all participating directors; a link to the download location of your film; and a statement saying “Dear Nadine and Charlie, I understand that by submitting this film to this contest I am sharing with you its distribution rights should you decide you would like to use it in the promotion of your band.”

Here are lyrics to the songs:

“Basic Instinct” wrote: My basic instincts
Are turning inside me
I am a warrior
Fighting

I’m breaking the circle
I’m learning to be for real
I’m closer, come closer
Sometime I sense
When the light is on
I’m reflecting

“Just Push Play” wrote: Move your arse

Everybody
Move your arse
Just push play

Everybody, Everybody
Just push play
Move your arse
Move your arse

Motion, Motion
Motion, Motion

Everybody
Move your arse
Just push play
Just push play

“Below the Waterline” wrote: Let’s stay here below the waterline
Below the waterline
So strangely familiar and forgotten
And concentrate on the shine of silver coins
I’m tired by the passing tide

I’ll breathe with you
Ill see the picture through your eyes
Ill breath with you
Ill see the picture through your eyes

Ill get away
With anything at all
Until the sun rise

Ill breath with you
Ill see the picture through your eyes
Ill breath with you
Ill see the picture through your eyes

Ill get away
With anything at all
Until the sun rise

Until the sun rise

It’s dark
We are so painfully forgotten and long lost

Let’s stay here below the waterline
Below the waterline
So strangely familiar and forgotten

“Signs of Life” wrote: Ahhhh!
Looking for signs of life
Looking for signs of life
Looking for signs of life
Looking for signs of life
Ahhhh!

Looking for signs of life
(repeat)

Everything I see
Seems dead to me
Everything seems so fragile
So fragile to me

Looking for signs of life
(repeat)

“Safe” wrote: Never
I’ll never leave you
I will believe in you
I’ll never leave you
I’ll never leave
I’ll never leave

The skies so clear and bright
So close in the desert
Spring time for all
A chance for me
Ill will never be hurt
So better now than later on
I just want to be safe and free
So where is that channel of light that I am meant to see?

I just want to be safe and free

“I Love You” wrote: I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you

When I met you I knew straight away
But I didn’t want to say
I love you

I held my tongue
Thought it was strong
Thought it was wrong
To say I love you

In the end I had to give in
Couldn’t hold it in

When I think of you
I feel it through and through
I know just what to do
I say I love you

I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you

In the end I had to give in
Couldn’t hold it in

I love, love, love
You, you, you, you
I love, love, love
Love you, you, you
I love, love, love
You, you, you, you
You, you, you, you
You, you, you, you

Mm “Signs of Life” maybe. The band gets the videos but I have no right to distribute the finished work? Do I need to get their approval first?

Good question, PE. Do we get the right to distribute the work (at least by putting it online on our homepage, but possibly also on a DVD with a collection of our work)?

Stefan.

My understanding is that the rights will be shared. I will clarify this with the band, though.

Of course, the text above doesn’t say “exclusive”, so it’ll be nonexclusive (though I’d be happier if the word “nonexclusive” was in that sentence, for clarity). However, do we get the nonexclusive right to distribute the song along with the video, which is quite something else.

Stefan.

They’ll retain all their copyrights but we’ll have the right to use the

They can show the finished product with our music where ever they like,
again so long as its for their promotion purposes.
Cheers,
Clem

The way I interpret this, you’ll be able to use your film in any way that doesn’t include making a profit. This seems perfectly fair to me.

I have a question for the community on this contest: Would anyone take objection to me entering it? It’s true that I have a head start on you guys by about 2 days. It’s also true that I’ve helped organize it, but the judging is completely up to Nadine and Charlie.

I wouldn’t be against that.

hey that sounds cool. WoW. a real big comp you got there but im not going to enter. Oh yeah, id love to but i just CANT do it. The time it would take and i probably wouldn’t fit in enough animation. Oh well. I must give myself time before i enter any competition really. Im still quite a n00b…i’ll have to improve my anmation and writing.

oh well! sammy O’feelgood

I don’t think so. I’ve listened to all 7 of them and don’t recall hearing any.

edit:

Sammy, I would urge you to consider making a film for this. Making a music video is a great way to get started in brickfilming. You don’t have to worry about voices, sound effects, or choosing music, and the exact length of your film is already decided for you.

That’s how I started! And it was actually kinda good! I find music videos easy because you don’t need a story! (Usually) (Okay that was a lie)

March 12… Hmmm I’m really in the mood for a music video!

And 345 bucks!
