It is clear that sometime in the near future, our news is going to have to be modified a bit. Currently, it displays every news item in the database. In the beginning, this was fine, but our front page has grown to an enormous size. The question is, how do we want to limit it?

We can probably put this one off for a little while, but I’m interested in all of your opinions. Shall we limit the number of news items displayed, keeping the rest from ever being seen again? This would be a simple but sloppy solution. Anyone that wanted to see previous news would be unable to do so.

Another possible fix is to limit the number of items displayed on the front and display the rest in a special “News Archive” that could maybe even be viewed by month.

I was trying to decide if comments would be of any use on our news. Something tells me it would become a breeding ground for spammers, but at the same time could provide an outlet for those who have questions or just want to talk about the latest news without creating a new thread in the forums. In a way, it could even solve a few of our spam problems.

What do you think?

use the news archive idea, that’s what I do on my site, and I’ve found a LOT of visitors seem to like digging through all the old news updates.
as far as the “comments” on news items go… I think the forums privide enough.
on a few sites I frequent each news post is followed by a “comment on this” link which leads to a post in the forums that reposts the news item as a forum thread and from there every member is free to contribute comments, reactions etc… or not.

Actually, Z, there’s an “active” field that decides if the news item should be displayed. There are many more items in the database than are being displayed. Every now and then I go through and cull out the un-important items. If our history page ever gets finished, it seems like an appropriate place to list the news archive, which could really just be a listing of all the inactive news items.
