Just FYI, this feature has graduated and is no longer beta! As a thank you, all beta testers will still be able to use this feature. Great work guys!

Alright, I didn’t intend for this to be your first assignment (task? quest?) but I had a sudden brainstorm last night for an idea that I find quite appealing.

It’s called “QuickPM”.

All you have to do to try it out is click one of the little “PM” buttons below posts to see what I mean.

I’m not sure if this is awesome or not yet. But I’m hoping that with some feedback from you guys this can become a new patron feature. :)

Anyways, have at it!

EDIT: Alllright, apparently it’s only working for me. I’ll have to do a lot more tinkering to figure out what’s wrong with this one. :P

EDIT 2: Alright, should be fixed now. :) Test away!

I clicked it, and a little box appeared far below everything else. Below it was a large black box. Both boxes are too the right, and the black box pushes out past the rest of the forum by a substantial amount. It looks like I sent you a short message.

What browser/OS are you using?

Can you try clearing your cache? We had this issue earlier but I appeared to have fixed it (in Safari and Firefox at least, I have no clue what happens in IE).

Hmm…nothing unique happens. I just go to the post pm page. I probably missed this one.

Ah, hadn’t added a beta tester tag to your profile yet. You should be good to go now Lech.

Most recent version of Firefox on Windows XP home.

I just tried it now (without clearing anything) and now a little window with a black border pops up. Looks quite cool. Another test PM sent.

I can test in in IE too if needed.

IE would be great.

Yeah, sometimes you just need to refresh it a couple times.

I’ll be changing the code quite often on these things, and on a heavy loading thing like these forums, it’ll just take a while sometimes for it to catch up.

Oooh, pretty. Personally, I’d change the color. Preferably Brickfilms.com theme color.

When I tried it in IE my computer crashed…then melted.

I kid. When I tried it in IE, it just brought me to the usual PM page.

That’s what I figured would happen in IE. If you could click on the “1 Error on Page” thing at the bottom of the window in IE and then copy the “advanced” text for me, that’d help a lot.

I went ahead and added support for a custom subject line as well as changed the color scheme to be a bit more brickfilm-y (I hope).

Thanks for the feedback so far! :)

- Double Post -

I’ve added some more formatting to the buttons and I’ve added a little feature that will let you jump straight to the regular PM page if you have the shift key down.

Using Windows XP Sp3 with Firefox

PM button + Shift Key works fine. brings up the normal pm page, in a new window.

Initially, I too had the “bottom, far right” box, but did a hard refeesh and now it seems to be coming up properly (small box, “Hey” in subject line and centered over the pm button that was clicked).

Using IE (not sure how to work out version number, I think it may be 7)

pm button just brings up the normal pm page (same window). It didn’t give me the “1 error” message, nor could I find any way for it to give me any debuggging information.

This would make a handy feature for the patrons. However, those using it would need to already be familiar with the way phpBB code works since there is no ‘assistance’ like there is on the regular pm page.

But for sending quick, simple messages, this is a great idea.

Edit: Sent myself a test message with the following subject line:

Hey – it’s a, short & funky test!

The idea is to test to see if the ampersand and other characters would create any problems. Interestingly, the characters I expected to not work went through just fine, but it added a backslash before the apostrophe:

“The subject line” wrote: Hey – it’s a, short & funky test!

Alright, that error with the apostrophe should be fixed now.

That’s too bad about IE. I suppose I’ll have to check it out on a friend’s PC or something.

Great job guys! Thanks for the feedback! We’ve already fleshed out a lot of bugs that we wouldn’t have normally caught.

This is pretty cool. I totally forgot about it and then went to PM someone and a little window popped up, making me smile. Comments:

– I changed the subject and then hit tab, expecting to be taken down to the message area. Instead the window disappeared and I got transported to a random spot in the topic. It would be nice if tab moved between boxes.

– shift + PM is kinda hard to remember. Maybe a button like “go to PM” would be better. What would be really cool is if you went to the regular PM page and it was preloaded with the username and any subject and text you’ve already written.

– the default subject annoys me. At the very least could it be “Hi [username]”?

Very cool little thingamajig here, Schlaeps

All three things have been modified. :)

To use the “go to PM” thing, just hit the “Preview” button.
