Hello fellow brickfilmers,
As you know that at this time the prize pool for FAR has not yet been organized.
So I think we should all post our ideas of the prize pool in this thread.

I was thinking are we going to do the usual Stop Motion Pro, Samson C01U and a bricklink voucher?
Mabey we should suggest new ideas for first, second and third place.
Please, if anyone has suggestions then post in this thread.

Thanks.

RevMen is currently contacting the owner of Stop Motion Pro (Paul) about arrangements with regard to last year’s IDEA prize. If Paul is willing to offer a similar prize for this year’s contest (or even a significant discount), it will certainly be welcome.

The microphone will probably not be offered unless there is a way to obtain them at a discount. RevMen has accepted the burden of providing one to satisfy last year’s prize pool requirements and I will be doing likewise (I am still waiting to hear from Nick Durron on his choice between a mic and SMP; MindGame receiving the leftover). In other words, RevMen and I both will be providing microphones for the IDEA prize pool.

A Bricklink prize is not likely to be in the offing unless there is some discount available. Any such “gift voucher” prize would probably be offered through Brickfilms own on-site store.

I notice there is a very good value in our BF store for the Corner Cafe. It is available (but not currently in stock) through Amazon for $119 and, although pricey, I feel this would make a very attractive prize which might elicit some worthy submissions from a few of the veterans. It would presumably be in stock by the time it needed to be shipped.

I have a couple of other leads I am currently pursuing with regard to prize contributions, but will await further progress before reporting them.

I agree, the Cafe corner would be nice, but the prize in the store there was $214 without paying through amazon, I got my cafe corner back in the summer for about 130 euro.

The cafe corner reminds me of this if we could find one that is a low price.

I see that I rather missed the original intent expressed in the opening post, as well as your instruction not to respond. I apologize for that (not enough coffee at the time).

Nonetheless, I feel that developing a prize pool is the responsibility of the Contests Ministry and the administrators of this site. We need to elicit as much contribution from sponsors (in exchange for publicity) as we can and even for the case where prize purchases are fully funded by the owners of Brickfilms, I feel it is our responsibility to select prizes in a manner which best promotes the site and contest participation/visibility. Therefore I propose that we do not request prize suggestions from the general membership.

I would add that generating a prize pool for the FAR contest is one of the most pressing duties that we face. The sooner we can advertise a prize pool, the more likely filmmakers will be to enter the contest; and the greater the benefit to any sponsors contributing prizes.

I agree, we should try to get the prize pool done as soon as we can.

*Double post*

I also was thinking since the cafe corner is very pricey that we buy a logitech quick cam pro 4000. I found this in the merch page for around $68. That would also be useful. Another good webcam similar to the quick cam pro 400 is the quick cam pro 9000. At the moment it’s around $78 which is a really low price for what I got my quick cam pro 9000 in the shop.

Beware though: I think that the prices in the merch page tend to rise.

With current brickfilms being of near-professional quality and all, I think it may be a good idea to have a prize for the “Best Young Director”. I would be willing to supply a prize for this (I’m thinking of ages 12 and less). I’m thinking about a copy of Richard Williams’ The Animator’s Survival Kit, but a more fun/more appropriate prize around the same prize level is also acceptable.

I think it’s fairest to award this prize through the same judging process as the regular awards.

My apologies for breaking in on this thread. I’m not sure I’m even supposed to see this forum – being an administrator opens doors, I guess.

My visits to brickfilms.com have been intermittent lately – you can best contact me by e-mail (stefan “address symbol” yellowhead “period” nl) if necessary.

Kind regards,

Stefan.

I very much like that idea, Stefan. If we have contestants under the age of 12 (or an age like that) I think we could try that out, I don’t know.

I have somewhat mixed feelings on the likely benefits of such an award. I certainly do wish to have Brickfilms be a more welcoming place for younger hobbyists and hope to have some awards/contests dedicated especially to the newer members (I offered such an award for a Halloween contest held last year).

I am just a little bit hesitant with mixing such an activity into the FAR contest. My main concerns are whether we could promote the award enough to ensure a good response and whether such young members would find the restrictions against copyrighted or trademarked too burdensome.

Let me propose for consideration that we hold a separate contest, specifically for the younger members, to be held sometime before the FAR deadline. This could be a part of the Challenge Series and be a bit more lenient about using copyrighted material (and perhaps offer a larger prize pool).

Having noted my reservations, I would in no way oppose your idea of a special FAR award for young brickfilmers and, were we to go ahead with it, would support it to the best of my ability. There would also be the potential to have the award winner be assured that his film would be included on a FAR DVD (perhaps even the top two or three winners).

I will leave the decision up to you, Stefan. I hope to have prizes arranged and a contest logo designed by the end of this month, so we should shoot for announcing your award at the same time. Let me know what you wish to do (I will send you an e-mail if you don’t get around to responding within the next few days).

I don’t think your reservations are prohibitive. Such kids can, and probably will, be assisted by their parents, and we can – at least for the prize – be a bit lenient when the rules haven’t been adhered to perfectly. And being part of a “big” contest is, of course, much more fun than competing on the sidelines.

I think an age limit is a good way of accomplishing the goal I had in mind, though I don’t know how we can enforce it. Probably something along the lines of “if it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t”. Does 12 years strike you as about right?

In short, I would like to go ahead with it. Good luck with the organisation!

Stefan.

Your plans sound good, Stefan. I have just today received approval from the site’s owners for the prize pool proposal of the Corner Store (first prize) plus another $75 or so. I hope to provide an announcement of the prizes and your Award early next month. If you wish to write your own announcement then post it here and I will incorporate it into my announcement.

Twelve years is a good choice. I think if we were to make it thirteen we might have to worry more about cheating (who wants to pretend they are twelve? :) ).

Excellent. I’m sure we’ll find something good as well for the next prize.
