I have decided to stand for this position, as my suggestion for a Minsiter of Brickfilms Welfare is not agreeable to RevMen. He has suggested those activities are the responsibility of this minister and of us all.

So, my platform is…

We have a Minister of Discussion, which, essentially, is a moderator for all the forums, involving most effort, I presume, in Community and LDF. I propose this ministry should actively moderate the Brickfilming Forums, doing the following…

- welcoming new registrants to the site and pointing out the features, resources and FAQs
- moderate the Brickfilming forums
- creation and moderation of a new ‘Start Here’ brickfilming forum, especially for newbies
- marshal help and advice for newbies, calling in experienced help where needed
- creation and management of a mentoring scheme, where a new member, genuinely wanting to improve, could be paired with a willing, experienced filmer
- provide/encourage feedback on lower quality films being ignored in the forums, or which have been rejected from the directory
- work with the Minister of Film Contest to create contests for newer members which will encourage them to learn and improve, and which give them a real chance of winning. These might be judged on greatest improvement over previous film, original storyline etc.
- work with the Ministers of [various resources] to ensure these are fully accessible to new members

I believe this role focusses more on developing talent, which is currently not covered in the existing cabinet roles and I believe is not currently being done by the incumbent MoD.

I would immediately appoint a deputy, whose role would be to actively moderate the chat, LDF and the Community discussion based forums, alongside myself. This person would likely be the runner up in the election, assuming I were to win.

Wow, sounds like a great platform. I would gladly be a deputy as well, since I visit both the Community forum and the LDF (where I have a good record as far as civility goes).

May I ask some questions?

Firstly, where to become MoD, you say that you would “provide/encourage feedback on lower quality films being ignored in the forums, or which have been rejected from the directory”. Whilst this would be something I would wholeheartedly support, I am concerned that the standards of the directory may be effected if some reviewers misinterpret your aims. What would you do to ensure this didn’t happen?

Secondly, I don’t support the idea of a new comers forum, as I believe all forums should provide that “warm welcome”. Where you to be elected, would you put this idea to a vote, rather than implement it straight away?

OK. This should in no way affect acceptance into the directory. Responsibility for that lies with another ministry anyway. What I meant here is that often, first films just fall below the horizon of most experienced filmers. I am saying I would discourage negative feedback but encourage constructive reviews. I would also deal with the occasional hurt feelings that sometimes causes.

No, I would implement it straight away, as it is described in my election manifesto. If people disagree with it, that may be reason enough not to vote for me.

Let me be clear that what I am suggesting is a place where people can ask anything they like without risk of being flamed. In this way, the main forums will not get clogged with this sort of ‘first post’ ‘help me get going’ kind of thread.

Being in overall charge of the forums, I feel it would be my duty to keep them clean and tidy. If you want to know how my moderating style works, look at the Official and Unofficial Contest forums, which I actively moderate. In fact I’m the only moderator. Briefly, I delete entire threads if necessary, move them if in the wrong place, and generally keep the place tidy.

Richard, I like the idea that you’ve proposed, and I think that the idea is certainly worth trying, but I’m concerned about your qualifications for being our MoD.

It’s not that you wouldn’t be fair and balanced and reasonable, but you don’t have a history of being a mod on our forums. Additionally you’ve mentioned in the past that you “cannot commit to be on the site every day,” but rather about “two or three times a week.” There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but I believe it will make it very difficult for you to adequately moderate the forums.

Your plan can still be implemented, but you don’t need to be MoD to make that happen. I’m certain that Cometgreen would be happy to give you the chance to do so in a deputy position, which would be much more fitting to your circumstances.

I second you. My only concern, as Watson pointed out, is that you can’t commit to coming on every day. I have no doubt that you’ll be a great at this position, but it is always best if you are a very active member.

I don’t think it’s necessary for the MoD to be here every day.

I have seen other sites that have a “questions forum” that’s explicitly for newbies to ask questions in. It does seem to work in those places but my fear is this would not encourage people to utilize our almost comprehensive set of resources.
