I just deleted another WoW-related spam post by klmn517. A ban on them would be nice. |

I have switched it so that admins have to approve registrations until this is fixed. Please let me know of users known to be spamming so we can figure out more about where this is coming from. This will mean for the time being that an admin has to approve any new users. Are that admins okay helping out with this? Thanks! |

How will you know if they’re a spammer if they haven’t posted anything? |

Yea, kharaku, that’s a good idea in theory, but there’s really no way to tell if the user is a spammer if they haven’t posted anything. Also, I’d like to request that if you find spam, PM ME OR THE DOCTOR THE USERNAME OF THE SPAMMER. When you link to a spam thread, it might already be gone by the time we get to it and we have no way of telling who the spammer was. I’m going to go and ban klmn now. Hopefully that will help. I don’t know the usernames of any other spammers, so when you find some, remember to PM the username to me or The Doctor and we’ll handle it. EDIT: I can’t find klmn517 in the members list, so I’m assuming somebody already banned him. Please correct me if this is false. |

I deleted the user and all his posts. I don’t see the point in IP banning as they can just reset their IP easily. Plus most spammers are bots that move on once they hit a site so a simple full delete is enough. |

i couldn’t find that user either. in terms of telling if they’re a spammer it’s not super hard although they have gotten smarter. (it is a machine, it does look at the site, it WILL put brick or lego in the username sometimes). There is an option to check the ip, this will run a search and tell you where they’re from. what i’ve been doing is 1 searching for their email on the net. usually they have already used it for spamming and u’ll find it on google. 2 if i dunno for sure i’ve been emailing them directly. if u get a legit response you can approve em. i am working to find more improvements for the security. the thing that worked before more less just made a field the bot couldn’t bypass. obviously they are onto that. we’ll find something though. thanks for the patience. this is as annoying for us as you. (and yes i know phpbb3 sux, it’s vulnerable, etc, we simply lack the resources at this time to move to something better so please bear with.) g3 |
