I’ve contacted all or most of you individually about this, but it’s proved to be too difficult to keep organized so I’ve decided to bring everyone here to discuss the future of the site. As I mentioned, I don’t have the time and barely have the energy to take care of the site anymore. Since moving to LA, free time has become more rare and priorities have shifted for me. I do, however, love brickfilms very much and couldn’t stand to see it die. Ideally someone would take the whole thing over from me. I don’t know exactly how that would work financially just yet. I have put a ton of time and money into this thing and I don’t think I’d be willing to let it go for free. Some fun facts to get you better acquainted with the brickfilms machine: -Patronage income is unknown due to horrible, horrible bookkeeping, but should be somewhere in the ballpark of $1000 a year. Maybe more, I don’t know. -Google ads have been generating $50 to $60 a month since I put them up. -The Boinx ad generates $25 a month. This is cheap. A motivated person could get other advertisers on board for a lot more. I am (obviously) not motivated. -The number of podcast subscribers most likely exceeds 10,000, but I have no way of knowing the real number. -Monthly hosting costs are currently $109. -We have 1500 GB of monthly bandwidth, which we exceed fairly regularly due to the podcast. Exceedence costs $.50 a GB (ouch!). Last month I shelled out an extra $190. -Lots and lots of interesting opportunities come up. I pass most of them by because I don’t have the time for them. Some of them are potentially money-making. -Merchandise can make a lot of money, depending on the effort you put into it. I pretty much sell everything I offer. Chroma cloth has been a great seller. DVDs are always great sellers. Shipping all of this stuff is a huge pain in the ass. Someone who was smart could figure out how to streamline it and save a lot of trouble and expense. -Brickfilms LLC is registered in Colorado and has its own bank account at Bank of the West. -The biggest pain in the ass, by far, is taking care of the server. Constant, unrelenting attacks by hackers and spammers make that part of the job unpleasant. Poor server citizenship by patrons and users of postbrickfilms also create problems. OK, that should be enough info to get things rolling. Questions? Interests? Comments? Concerns? If you want out of this group just let me know and I’ll remove you right away. |

As a first step towards server security… is it possible to disable PHP and other scripts for Postbrickfilms.com users? As far as I can tell, it was never meant to be anything other than an alternative to Brickshelf. As for the rest of your message… I will be here to think along with you, but I have not much affinity with financial things, and don’t think I can be of much assistance in that respect. Stefan. |

It’s become pretty clear that no one’s willing to take this operation over in its current form, so I’m going to have to change it. Moving the podcast to a separate hosting account was the first step. Next will be postbrickfilms. Eventually I will end all patron hosting accounts and move brickfilms itself onto a shared hosting account somewhere. I should be able to cut monthly costs in half or so, which should be coverable by advertising alone. That will make the site pretty much self-sufficient. It’ll mean we’ll lose our custom chat, probably, and we’ll lose the sound library submission functionality, but I think it’s a cost worth bearing. |

Sad though it may be, it does seem like the way to go. A co-hosted website is easier to transfer into other hands than the full-featured thing we have now. Stefan. |
